“Sam checked the clock for the fifth time, then the window, then the clock again. He had read the same page of his book three times without taking in a single word.” How is Sam most likely feeling?
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — what do his actions tell you?
Checking the clock again and again and reading without absorbing anything are signs of restless waiting — not boredom, sleepiness or anger, none of which the passage suggests. Inference means choosing the feeling the details point to, even when it isn't named.
“The normally bustling market was deserted after the storm; not a single stall was open.” In this sentence, the word deserted most nearly means —
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — use the clues around the word.
The clues — “not a single stall was open”, and the contrast with a “normally bustling” market — show deserted means empty here. Vocabulary-in-context questions are answered by the words around the target word, not a dictionary you can't see.
“Bees do far more than make honey. As they move from flower to flower, they carry pollen that lets plants make seeds and fruit. Without bees and other pollinators, many of the foods we eat every day would become rare and expensive.” What is the main idea of this passage?
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — which idea covers the whole passage?
The passage opens with “far more than make honey” and spends the rest on how bees help plants and food — so the main idea is their importance to plants and food. The other options are small details or side points, not what the whole passage is about. The main idea is the umbrella that covers every sentence.
“Remember to bring a hat, a full water bottle and sturdy shoes. The trail is long and there is little shade, so come prepared.” Why did the author most likely write this?
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — ask what the text is trying to do.
The text is a list of things to bring plus a reason to prepare — its purpose is to advise, not to entertain, argue against hiking, or describe scenery. Asking “what is this text trying to do to the reader?” points you to the author's purpose.
“Another new phone, released just months after the last one, with one extra camera and a much bigger price tag. No doubt it will sell in the millions.” How does the writer feel about the new phone?
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — read the tone, not just the facts.
The details are chosen to needle: “just months after the last one”, only “one extra camera”, a “much bigger price tag”. The closing “No doubt it will sell in the millions” is dry rather than admiring — the writer is unimpressed. Tone questions turn on a writer's word choices, not the plain facts.
“The library is open from Tuesday to Saturday. On Thursdays it stays open late, until 8 pm. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.” Maya wants to visit the library after 6 pm. On which day can she do this?
Choose an answer to see how it’s worked out. That's it.
Close — find the day it stays open late.
The passage says the library only stays open late — until 8 pm — on Thursdays; every other open day closes earlier, and it's shut on Sunday and Monday. So Thursday is the only day Maya can visit after 6 pm. These questions reward reading the details exactly, not from memory.
